Paint Colors/Options

Working on the 84 this spring trying to get it back in shape and thinking about repainting and doing some patch work.

Recommendations of paint colors/paint types for the 3 blue stripes on the side of the hull? Also wondering about where to source the gold stripes on the top and bottom and a few of the decals? Picture of the boat as is, are below.

Hoping that if I take time to tape correctly it shouldn’t be too bad – but then again ignorance is bliss right?

Real question is what kind of speakers are you going to mount to those fancy bolts hanging out the side of the boat....bet those were original

It sure does Tim.   In your photo, the top stripe looks Royal Blue.

Pat, to repair those holes, you'll need to get to the back side of them. Pull the carpet back, and clean up the glass in that area. Then glass the holes shut from the inside. Tape over the holes on the outside when you do this, so you dont drip resin down the side of the boat. Once that is dried, then you can repair the glass and gel on the outside. Grind off the loose or cracked gel around the holes. I would probably fill it with a high strength thickened resin first, to bring it close to flush. Once thats dry, then grind down just below flush with a dremel. Use a conversion coat (vinylester) prior to gel. Then do a color matched gelcoat repair. Sand it smooth and buff it out- good as new!

or what tim said. basically the same thing just more detailed. Couldnt he just use vinylester resin for the repair, then he wouldnt need it in addition as a conversion coat?

I found using vinylester to be sort of a PITA. I did not care for the way it held the filler either. To get it to cure all the way, you need to add wax (just like poly). Getting the ratio of hardener is also critical to get it to cure properly, and have the proper strength. Id use epoxy instead for the repair, its a piece of cake to work with, in comparison- plus its stronger.

I suspect between Pat and Chris that they'll have plenty of fiberglass supplies around to do this repair... if not quite yet, soon!

Yes, you can use bondo for filler- it works great for final fairing, actually. Its a low strength filler though, so I wouldnt lay it on very thick.

Pretty sure no conclusions have been reached as of yet! Also note that Pat's boat has Dresdon Blue gel... not the gray or taffy (white). I have also noticed 2 different blue striped schemes on the 82-84 boats... though only one is shown in the brochure.

ha ha - looks like I'm gonna take a crack at that mystery then! Tim - those color charts help a lot! Thanks for the help guys - on both the patching and the paint! We'll see how this one turns out!
